    NOTE: You must be HIV negative for this treatment and at high risk to be suitable for this medication, as it is a preventative medication. If you have had a positive HIV test you need to go to a STI clinic for confirmation or treatment as PrEP is not suitable for you.
    You may be at at high risk
    • If you are having sex with someone who is HIV positive and has a detectable viral load.
    • if you do not use condoms when having sex with someone whose HIV status is not clear to you, and you’re: a man who has sex with men, a transgender person who has sex with men, or a woman who has sex with bisexual men.
    • If you are having sex with someone from a country with a high rate of HIV.
    • If you are taking drugs using needles and sharing those needles with others
    • If you get STIs (sexually transmitted infections) on a regular basis.
    • You are a sex worker
    • You are involved in Sexualised drug use
    • You have Alcohol dependence
    • You have been Incarcerated
    • You’re HIV negative and have had condomless sex in the past 3 months and think you will again in the next three months, and you are: cis or transgender MSM or transgender woman.
    • You’re HIV negative and expect to have sex without condoms with an HIV positive partner/s with a detectable viral load.
    • You don’t meet the first two descriptions and you might be having heterosexual sex, but you’ve been clinically assessed as being at a similar high risk of becoming HIV positive.

    • HIV test: (4th generation antibody/antigen test preferred)
    • Creatinine
    • STD screening
    • Pregnancy test
    • Hepatitis C antibody (particularly for MSM and injection drug users)
    • Liver conditions
    • Kidney conditions
    • any hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose
    • Heart disease ‘Long QT’ interval (an electrical anomaly that can lead to heart rhythm disturbances sometimes caused by other medicines you might be on)
    • Acute porphyria (a rare hereditary blood disease)
    • Any serious medical condition which may require immediate hospitalisation
    • Thrush
    • Unintentional weight loss
    • Chest pain
    • Blood in your urine
    • Pain when urinating
    • Blood in your stools
    • Urinary tract infections (UTI)
    • Night sweats
    • Fever
    • Aminoglycosides (for bacterial infection)
    • Amphotericin B (for fungal infection)
    • Foscarnet (for viral infection)
    • Ganciclovir (for viral infection)
    • Pentamidine (for infections)
    • Vancomycin (for bacterial infection)
    • Interleukin-2 (to treat cancer)
    • Cidofovir (for viral infection)
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, to relieve bone or muscle pains)
