FAQ
1. What is permethrin cream used for?
Permethrin cream is a topical medication primarily used to treat scabies and lice infestations. The main uses are:
- Scabies: Permethrin cream is highly effective in treating scabies, a condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and rash. The cream kills these mites and their eggs. Typically, you apply it all over the body from the neck down and leave it on for 8 to 14 hours before washing it off. A second application may be required a week later to ensure all mites and eggs are eradicated.
- Lice: It is also used to treat lice infestations, including head lice and pubic lice (crab lice). For head lice, you apply the cream to damp, shampooed hair, leave it on for 10 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. For pubic lice, you apply the cream to all pubic hair and surrounding areas, leave it on for 10 minutes, and then wash it off.
Permethrin works as an insecticide by affecting the nervous system of the parasites, causing their paralysis and death.

3. How quickly does permethrin cream work?
Permethrin cream begins to work immediately upon application. Here’s a detailed timeline of its effectiveness:
- Initial Application: After applying permethrin cream to the skin, it needs to be left on for 8 to 14 hours to effectively kill the mites causing scabies. It’s usually recommended to apply it before going to bed and wash it off the next morning.
- First Results: Most people will see an improvement in symptoms within a few days. The itching and rash associated with scabies can start to diminish after the initial treatment.
- Second Application: To ensure all mites and their eggs are eliminated, a second application is often recommended one week after the first treatment. This helps to kill any newly hatched mites.
- Full Relief: Itching can continue for up to four weeks after treatment due to an allergic reaction to the dead mites. However, significant relief is typically noticed within a few days to a week of the first application.
4. Can I use permethrin cream 2 days in a row?
No, you should not use permethrin cream two days in a row. Permethrin cream is typically applied once and then left on the skin for 8 to 14 hours before being washed off. A second application is generally recommended after 7 days to ensure that any newly hatched mites are also killed. Using permethrin cream more frequently than directed can lead to skin irritation and other side effects.
