What is the Ventolin Evohaler?

The Salbutamol Easyhaler is a fast-acting reliever inhaler, containing salbutamol sulphate, that helps open your airways quickly when you need it most.

It's used to treat and prevent asthma symptoms after exercise and other triggers.

If you're experiencing a tight chest, breathlessness, or wheezing, Ventolin gets to work quickly, opening the airways in your lungs to make breathing easier.

Is an evohaler the same as an inhaler?

An evohaler is a type of inhaler. The term ‘evohaler’ refers to a specific kind of pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) that releases medicine as a fine mist when you press down on the canister. You might also hear it called a ‘puffer’ or a ‘blue inhaler’.

How does the Ventolin Evohaler work?

The Ventolin Evohaler works by relaxing the muscles around the airways in your lungs, which helps to open them up and make breathing easier.

When asthma strikes, your airways can tighten and become inflamed, leading to wheezing, a tight chest, and shortness of breath. Salbutamol gets to work quickly to ease these symptoms.

It can be used:

  • To relieve asthma symptoms when they happen, like wheezing, breathlessness, or a tight chest.

  • To prevent symptoms before exercise or exposure to a known trigger, like pollen or cold air.

  • As part of a regular treatment plan if your GP has recommended this.

How to use your Ventolin Evohaler

You can identify your Ventolin inhaler by the embossed letter ‘V’ on the plastic case. It works by producing a fine mist that you inhale through your mouth into your lungs.

Getting the technique right means the medicine reaches your lungs properly, so it's worth practising in front of a mirror for the first few times. If you see a mist coming from the top of the inhaler or the sides of your mouth, the medicine hasn't been delivered properly, so take a breath and try again.

Before you use it for the first time (or after 5 or more days without use):

  • Remove the mouthpiece cover by gently squeezing the sides with your thumb and forefinger and pulling apart.

  • Shake the inhaler well.

  • Point the mouthpiece away from you and press the canister to release 2 puffs into the air.

Using your inhaler step-by-step:

  • Remove the mouthpiece cover and check it's clean and free of any objects, inside and out.

  • Shake the inhaler 4-5 times.

  • Stand or sit upright and breathe out as far as you comfortably can, but don't breathe back in yet.

  • Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base, below the mouthpiece.

  • Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it (don't bite).

  • Start to breathe in slowly and deeply through your mouth, then press down on the canister to release a puff while you're still breathing in.

  • Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for a few seconds, or as long as is comfortable.

  • If you need a second puff, wait about 30 seconds before repeating.

  • Replace the mouthpiece cover firmly after use, pushing until it clicks into place.

How to clean your evohaler

You should clean your inhaler every week. It's important to keep on top of this, as the small hole where the medicine comes out can get blocked over time, which stops the inhaler from working properly.

Here’s how to clean your inhaler:

  • Remove the metal canister from the plastic inhaler unit and set it aside. Don't put the canister in water.

  • Remove the plastic mouthpiece cover.

  • Rinse both plastic parts under warm, running water for at least 30 seconds.

  • Let the water run through the mouthpiece, then turn the plastic inhaler unit around and let the water run through it for another 30 seconds.

  • Shake off any excess water.

  • Leave both plastic parts to dry completely, overnight if possible.

  • Once everything is dry, put the canister back in and replace the mouthpiece cover.

How effective is the Ventolin Evohaler?

The Ventolin Evohaler is a highly effective fast-acting reliever inhaler. When you take a puff, it gets to work almost straight away, relaxing the muscles around your airways to ease breathing difficulties, wheezing, and chest tightness. The effects typically last for 4-6 hours.

It's important to note that Ventolin is a reliever inhaler, not a preventer. It's designed to give immediate, temporary relief from asthma symptoms rather than treating the underlying inflammation that causes them.

If you find you're reaching for your inhaler more than a couple of times a week, it could be a sign your asthma isn't as well-controlled as it could be, and it's worth having a chat with your GP.

Potential side effects of the Ventolin Evohaler

The Ventolin Evohaler may cause side effects in some people, but not everyone gets them. Common side effects may include:

  • feeling shaky
  • headaches

These effects are usually mild and tend to settle down as your body adjusts. If they bother you or don't go away, speak to your pharmacist or GP.

When to seek medical help

Speak to your GP or pharmacist if:

  • your symptoms are getting worse or your inhaler isn't providing the relief it usually does
  • you're using your Ventolin inhaler more frequently than usual, for example, more than 4 times in 24 hours, 3 or more days each week, or in the middle of the night at least once a week

Don't ignore worsening symptoms. If your reliever inhaler isn't helping during an asthma attack, call 999 straight away.

When should this product not be used?

Ventolin Evohaler isn't suitable for everyone.

  • Don't use it if you're allergic to any of its ingredients.

  • Ventolin Evohaler is not suitable for treating premature labour or threatened miscarriage. Inhaled salbutamol products aren't appropriate for this purpose.

  • If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or think you might be pregnant, please speak to your GP or one of our pharmacists before ordering. We want to make sure you're getting the safest option for you and your baby.

  • Ventolin can cause dizziness in some people. Don't drive or operate machinery until you know how you’re affected.

For further information on warnings, please refer to the patient information leaflet provided.

Storage information

  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

  • Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and frost.

  • If your inhaler gets very cold, remove the metal canister from the plastic case and warm it in your hands for a few minutes before use. Don't use anything else to warm it up.

  • The metal canister is pressurised, so don't expose it to temperatures above 50°C, and don't puncture, break or burn it, even when it's empty.

  • Don't dispose of your inhaler via wastewater or household waste. Take it to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Alternatives to Ventolin Evohaler

Medicated alternatives

All of the inhalers below contain the same active ingredient as a Ventolin Evohaler (salbutamol), so if Ventolin isn't available or isn't right for you, one of these could be a good alternative.

Always speak to your GP or pharmacist to find the best fit for you.

  • Airomir
  • Asmalal
  • Salamol Easi-Breathe (releases medication automatically when you breathe in)
  • Easyhaler salbutamol
  • Pulvinal
  • Salamol
  • Salbulin

Non-drug alternatives

While there's no substitute for a reliever inhaler during an asthma attack, there are things you can do alongside your medication to help manage your asthma day-to-day, like:

  • identifying and avoiding triggers like cigarette smoke (and quitting smoking if you do so), pollen, pet dander, or dust mites
  • breathing exercises like the Buteyko technique, which some people find helpful for managing symptoms
  • staying active through gentle, regular exercise
  • using a spacer with your inhaler to help improve how much medicine reaches your lungs
  • having an asthma action plan agreed with your GP, so you know exactly what to do if your symptoms change

Frequently asked questions about Ventolin Evohalers

How often can you use a Ventolin Evohaler?

The maximum dose is 8 puffs in a 24-hour period. To relieve symptoms, you can take 1-2 puffs as needed, or 2 puffs around 10-15 minutes before a known trigger, like exercise. If you’re needing your inhaler more often, it's a sign your asthma may need a closer look.

How do I dispose of my Ventolin Evohaler?

Don't put your used inhaler in the bin. Inhalers contain pressurised gas and residual medicine, so they need to be disposed of responsibly.

The best way to dispose of your Ventolin Evohaler is to take it to your local pharmacy. Most pharmacies will accept used inhalers and dispose of them safely.
