How To Take Nexium Tablets

• If your doctor has found that your food pipe has been slightly damaged, the recommended dose is one Nexium 40 mg gastro-resistant tablet once a day for 4 weeks. Your doctor may tell you to take the same dose for a further 4 weeks if your gullet has not yet healed.
• The recommended dose once the gullet has healed is one Nexium 20 mg gastro-resistant tablet once a day
• If your gullet has not been damaged, the recommended dose is one Nexium 20 mg gastro-resistant tablet each day. Once the condition has been controlled, your doctor may tell you to take your medicine as and when you need it, up to a maximum of one Nexium 20 mg gastro-resistant tablet each day.
• If you have severe liver problems, your doctor may give you a lower dose

• Do not use any other liquids
• Stir until the tablets break up

Acid Reflux

Heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid travelling up towards the throat (acid reflux). If it keeps happening, it’s called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

Check if you have acid reflux
The main symptoms of acid reflux are:

Causes of heartburn and acid reflux
Lots of people get heartburn from time to time. There’s often no obvious reason why.

Sometimes it’s caused or made worse by:

certain food and drink – such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate, and fatty or spicy foods
being overweight

It’s best to take these with food or soon after eating, as this is when you’re most likely to get heartburn. They may also work for longer if taken with food.

See a GP if:
Lifestyle changes and pharmacy medicines aren’t helping
You have heartburn most days for 3 weeks or more
You have other symptoms, like food getting stuck in your throat, frequently being sick or losing weight for no reason

Your GP can provide stronger treatments and help rule out any more serious possible causes of your symptoms.

<strong>WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF NEXIUM?</strong>

NEXIUM can cause serious side effects, including:

Low vitamin B12 levels in your body. Low vitamin B12 can happen in some people who take a proton pump inhibitor medicine for at least 3 years. If low vitamin B12 levels happen, it is usually after 3 years of treatment. You may or may not have symptoms of low vitamin B12

Low magnesium levels in your body. Low magnesium can happen in some people who take a proton pump inhibitor medicine for at least 3 months. If low magnesium levels happen, it is usually after a year of treatment. You may or may not have symptoms of low magnesium.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms:

– seizures
– dizziness
– abnormal or fast heartbeat
– jitteriness
– jerking movements or shaking (tremors)
– muscle weakness
– spasms of the hands and feet
– cramps or muscle aches
– spasm of the voice box

Your doctor may check the level of magnesium in your body before you start taking NEXIUM or during treatment if you will be taking NEXIUM for a long period of time.

The most common side effects with NEXIUM may include:

– headache
– diarrhea
– nausea
– gas
– abdominal pain
– constipation
– dry mouth
– drowsiness
