  • What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a once-weekly weight loss injection containing semaglutide. It's made by Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company with over 100 years of experience in metabolic health, including the development of Ozempic. Wegovy is their dedicated weight management treatment, fully licensed in the UK for adults who meet the eligibility criteria. It works by mimicking a hormone your body already produces to regulate hunger, making it easier to eat less without relying on willpower alone. It's not a replacement for healthy habits, but it does make those habits easier to stick to.

    How does Wegovy work?

Your body naturally releases a hormone called GLP-1 after eating, which helps signal to your brain that you’re full. For some people, those hunger-control signals may not feel strong enough or last long enough. Wegovy mimics GLP-1 and keeps those signals working for longer, helping you feel more in control of your appetite. It works by reducing hunger, slowing digestion, and helping you stay fuller for longer after meals. With Wegovy, many people find they:
    • feel fuller from smaller portions
    • stay satisfied for longer after eating
    • experience fewer food cravings throughout the day
    • have better blood sugar control
    • notice less ‘food noise’ and fewer constant thoughts about food
For many, that constant mental pull towards food begins to quieten, making it easier to build healthier habits and maintain a calorie deficit over time.

    Does Wegovy work?

Yes, Wegovy is very effective at helping people lose weight. The STEP UP trial tested the 7.2mg dose in adults with obesity over 72 weeks. People on the 7.2mg dose lost 21% of their body weight on average, compared to up to 17% on the standard 2.4mg dose and just under 4% on the placebo.

How long does Wegovy take to work?

Although Wegovy starts working straight away, most people only begin noticing visible changes within the first 4 to 8 weeks. More significant weight loss tends to kick in from around week 12. How quickly you lose weight depends on a number of factors, including your diet, calorie intake, activity levels, metabolism, starting weight, and dose adjustments over time.

How long do I need to stay on Wegovy?

There’s no set time you need to stay on Wegovy. It’s determined by your weight loss goals, your reaction to the treatment, and what your clinician thinks is appropriate. While stopping treatment can cause hunger levels to return to where they were before, many people find that they’re able to stick to the healthy habits they built while on Wegovy to keep the weight off once they stop. However, Wegovy is also safe to use as a long-term treatment. Your maintenance dose, whether that's 1.7mg, 2.4mg, or 7.2mg, is the dose you'll stay on once you've worked through the titration schedule. Not everyone needs to reach the highest dose to see meaningful weight loss. Many people achieve excellent results at 1.7mg or 2.4mg and stay there long-term. Your prescriber will help you find the right dose for you and review your progress along the way.

    Wegovy on the NHS

The NHS started rolling out weight loss injections like Wegovy in 2025, but access is limited. To be eligible, you'll generally need a BMI of 35 or above (or 32.5 or above if you're of Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean origin), alongside a weight-related health condition. Lower BMI thresholds may apply if you meet additional criteria for specialist weight management services. Eligibility criteria can also vary depending on your local Integrated Care Board (ICB). If you don't want to wait or can't access Wegovy through the NHS, you can order privately through a registered online pharmacy, like us here at myPharmacy.

    Wegovy price in the UK

The cost of Wegovy depends on which dose you're taking. At the time of writing, the lowest starting dose of 0.25mg starts from £109, with prices increasing as you titrate up through the strengths.

    Wegovy doses

    Wegovy comes in 6 doses:
    • 25mg
    • 5mg
    • 1mg
    • 7mg
    • 4mg
    • 2mg
No matter your weight or circumstances, your Wegovy treatment always starts at 0.25mg. Starting low gives your body time to adjust and reduces the risk of side effects.

    How to increase your dose

The gradual dose escalation schedule is called titration:
    • Weeks 1 to 4: 0.25mg
    • Weeks 5 to 8: 0.5mg
    • Weeks 9 to 12: 1mg
    • Weeks 13 to 16: 1.7mg (maintenance dose)
    • Weeks 17 to 20: 2.4mg (maintenance dose)
    • Week 20 onwards: 7.2mg (maintenance dose)
You should only increase your dose when your prescriber advises it. Jumping ahead is one of the main causes of unpleasant side effects and it doesn't improve your results.

Can I stay on a low dose of Wegovy?

Not everyone needs to reach the highest dose to see meaningful weight loss. However, most people will need to titrate up over time as their body adjusts to the medication, meaning the lower doses become less effective. Your prescriber will help you find the right dose for your needs and monitor your progress throughout your treatment journey.

What happens if you miss a dose?

If you've missed a dose of Wegovy, take it as soon as you remember, as long as it's been 5 days (120 hours) or less since your scheduled dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule as normal.

    How to inject Wegovy

    Step 1: Check your pen

Make sure the dose matches your prescription, the pen is in date, and the liquid is clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy or has particles, don't use it and contact your prescriber. Remove the cap and check that the pen isn't damaged.

Step 2: Wash your hands and prepare your injection site

Wash your hands, then clean your injection site with soap and water or an alcohol swab. Let it dry and don't touch it again once it's clean.

Step 3: Attach a new needle

Always use a new needle for every injection. Tear off the paper tab, push the needle onto the pen and turn until secure. Pull off the outer cap and keep it for later, then pull off the inner cap and throw it away. Don't try to put the inner cap back on.

Step 4: Check the flow (new pens only)

Skip this step if it's not your first injection from this pen. Turn the selector to the flow check symbol, hold the pen needle-up and press the button until the counter shows 0. A drop should appear at the tip. If it doesn't, repeat up to 2 more times. If it still doesn't work, replace the needle and try again. If there's still no drop, use a new pen.

    Step 5: Set your dose

Turn the selector until your prescribed dose lines up with the dose pointer. Don't count clicks. If the counter stops before reaching your dose, use a new pen.

    Step 6: Inject your dose

Insert the needle into your chosen site, press and hold the button until the counter shows 0, then count slowly to 6 before removing the needle. If you see blood, press gently with a tissue or cotton pad. Remember, Wegovy is injected under the skin, never into a vein or muscle.

    Injecting Wegovy 7.2mg

Until the 7.2mg pen becomes available, your 7.2mg Wegovy dose is made up of 3 separate 2.4mg injections. You’ll be supplied 3 x 2.4mg pens. You would need to give 3 separate injections each week to make up your full weekly dose. Once the 7.2mg is available, this process will be much simpler, as you’ll only have to use 1 injection each week. We'll keep you updated on when this becomes available.

    Best Wegovy injection sites

You can inject Wegovy into your abdomen, thighs, or upper arms. You should rotate your injection site each week to keep any irritation to a minimum.

Best time of day to inject Wegovy

There's no medically required time of day to take Wegovy. As it's a long-acting weekly medication, the best time is simply whatever works for you, as long as you're taking it on the same day each week. Lots of people find evenings or weekends work well, as it makes it easier to manage any side effects like nausea.

    How to store Wegovy

Keep your pen in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C, in its original packaging to protect it from light. Don't store it at the back of the fridge where it's coldest, as it could freeze. Always check it hasn't frozen before you inject. Before injecting, make sure the liquid is clear, colourless to slightly yellow, and free from particles. Check the pen isn't damaged or frozen, and that it's within its expiry date. If your pen has been unrefrigerated for more than 42 days, don't use it. If you're unsure, contact your prescriber before injecting.

How to dispose of your Wegovy pen

First, guide the used needle into the outer cap on a flat surface, unscrew it and place it in a sharps bin. Once you're done with the pen, it can go in your usual bin as long as the needle's been removed.

    Travelling on Wegovy

Wegovy can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 42 days, so it's fine to take on holiday. If you're flying, pack it in your carry-on as the baggage hold can drop to below-freezing temperatures.

5 ways to increase weight loss on Wegovy

Hitting a plateau can feel frustrating, but it's a completely normal part of the weight loss journey. If your progress has slowed down, here are 5 tips that can help you get things moving again.

    1.      Increase your dose

When you first start Wegovy, you gradually increase your dose over time. So, if you feel like your current dose isn't doing enough and your weight loss is plateauing, speak to your prescriber as it might be time to increase your dose.

    2.      Include protein in your diet

While Wegovy does reduce your appetite, what you eat still matters. Prioritising protein-rich foods like eggs, fish, and legumes helps you feel fuller for longer and supports muscle maintenance as you lose weight. Try to include a source of protein in every meal where you can.

    3.      Look at portion size

Even with a reduced appetite, pay attention to how much you're eating. Eating slowly and mindfully can help you tune into your hunger cues, making it easier to recognise when you're full and avoid overeating without realising it.

    4.      Move more

You don't need to spend hours in the gym to see results. Find movement you actually enjoy, whether that's walking, swimming, or cycling, and try to build it into your routine. Even small increases in your daily activity can make a difference over time.

    5.      Lifestyle changes

Long-term weight loss is about more than medication. Prioritising good sleep, managing stress, and cutting back on ultra-processed foods and alcohol can all support your progress.

    Wegovy side effects

Side effects are most common when you first start Wegovy or when you increase your dose, as your body needs time to adjust. For most people, these tend to settle down within a few weeks. If they persist or become difficult to manage, speak to your prescriber. Here are the most common Wegovy side effects, how long they're likely to last, and what you can do to manage them.

    Headaches

Headaches are common in the early stages of treatment. Staying well hydrated, getting enough rest, and taking over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol can help keep them manageable.

    Nausea and vomiting

Nausea is one of the most commonly reported side effects of Wegovy. Eating smaller, lighter meals, avoiding rich or fatty foods, and eating slowly can all help. Try not to lie down straight after eating, and if you're vomiting frequently, make sure you're keeping your fluids up.

    Diarrhoea

If you're experiencing diarrhoea, it's important to stay hydrated. Sticking to plain, easy-to-digest foods like rice, toast, and bananas can help settle things down while your body adjusts.

    Constipation

Drinking plenty of water, eating more fibre-rich foods, and keeping active can all help with constipation. If it's particularly uncomfortable, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist about whether a gentle laxative might help.

    Stomach pain

Mild stomach pain or discomfort is common, especially after eating. Eating smaller portions and avoiding fatty or spicy foods can help. If the pain is severe or doesn't improve, contact your prescriber.

    Feeling weak or tired

Some people feel more tired than usual, particularly in the early weeks. Try to prioritise rest, keep your meals balanced, and make sure you're eating enough to fuel your body, even if your appetite has reduced.

    Wegovy 7.2mg side effects

The side effects of Wegovy 7.2mg are the same as those seen with other Wegovy doses, as it's the same medication. Clinical trials showed that side effects at this higher dose were common, particularly gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. Some people also experienced unusual nerve-related skin sensations (known as dysesthesia), though in most cases these resolved on their own during treatment.

    When to seek medical help

While most side effects from Wegovy are manageable, some need immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, call 111 straight away, or 999 if it's an emergency:
    • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): Look out for difficulty breathing, sudden swelling of the face or throat, or a rapid heartbeat.
    • Acute pancreatitis: Intense, persistent pain in your stomach or back that doesn't ease up.
    • Diabetic eye disease complications: If you have diabetic retinopathy and notice any changes to your vision, speak to your doctor straight away.
If any side effects are persisting and starting to affect your day-to-day life, don't wait it out. Speak to your prescriber and get the support you need. If you're ever unsure whether something needs attention, it's always better to check.

    Guidance on Wegovy injections

Wegovy is suitable for adults aged 18 to 74. There are a few important things to be aware of before starting or continuing treatment:
    • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Wegovy isn't recommended during pregnancy, as its effects on unborn babies aren't yet known. If you're planning to get pregnant, stop treatment at least 2 months before trying to conceive.
    • If you become pregnant while using Wegovy, speak to your doctor straight away as your treatment will need to be stopped.
    • You also shouldn't use Wegovy while breastfeeding, as it's not known whether it passes into breast milk.
    • Contraception: It's recommended that you use contraception while taking Wegovy.
    • Driving and operating machinery: Wegovy is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machinery. However, some people do experience dizziness, particularly in the first 3 months of treatment. If you feel dizzy, don't drive or operate machinery until you feel better.
    • Other medicines: Always let your prescriber know about any other medicines you're taking, have recently taken, or might take.

    Alternatives to Wegovy

If Wegovy isn't right for you, there are plenty of alternatives to help you on your weight loss journey. Some are already available in the UK, while others are coming soon:
    • Mounjaro: Another once-weekly injection containing tirzepatide, which targets 2 appetite-related hormones, GLP-1 and GIP.
    • Wegovy tablets or Rybelsus: A daily semaglutide tablet that's expected in the UK in 2026 specifically for weight loss. In the meantime, there’s Rybelsus, which is licensed for type 2 diabetes but can sometimes be prescribed off-label for weight management.
    • Foundayo (orforglipron): A brand new once-daily GLP-1 pill that's just been approved in the US and can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. It isn't yet approved in the UK, but private availability could follow later in 2026.
    • Orlistat (Alli, Orlos, Xenical): Works in the gut to block around a third of the fat you eat from being absorbed. The 60mg version is available over-the-counter, while the stronger 120mg version is prescription-only.
    • Mysimba: A prescription-only daily tablet containing naltrexone and bupropion, which works on the areas of the brain that control hunger and cravings. Currently only available privately in the UK.

    Wegovy vs Ozempic

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide and are made by Novo Nordisk, but they're licensed for different purposes. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is specifically licensed for weight loss. The main difference is the dose. Wegovy goes up to 7.2mg, while Ozempic goes up to 2mg, which is why Wegovy can support greater weight loss of up to 21%.

    Wegovy FAQs

Can I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Yes, you can switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy if your clinician thinks it's the right move for you. It’s usually recommended that you wait 4 weeks after your last Mounjaro injection before starting Wegovy. However, our prescribers may be able to suggest different switching gaps based on your previous experience with Mounjaro.

Is Wegovy as good as Mounjaro?

Both are highly effective weight loss medications. Clinical trials show Mounjaro produces slightly higher average weight loss (up to 22.5% compared to Wegovy's 21%), though many people on Wegovy lost up to 25% of their body weight. That said, everyone responds differently, and Wegovy remains one of the most effective weight loss treatments available.

Can I start Wegovy at 1.7mg?

No, you’ll need to start from the lowest dose of 0.25mg. Wegovy follows a set titration schedule that starts at 0.25mg and increases gradually over several months. Starting at a higher dose like 1.7mg isn't recommended, as it increases the risk of side effects. This gradual increase is there to give your body time to adjust.

Do you lose more weight on a higher dose of Wegovy?

Generally, yes. Clinical trials have shown that higher doses of Wegovy tend to produce greater weight loss results, with the newly approved 7.2mg dose showing average weight loss of up to 21% of body weight. But not everyone needs to reach the highest dose to see effective weight loss, and many people do very well on lower doses. Can you still lose weight in the maintenance phase? After around 12 months of Wegovy use, your weight loss tends to plateau, even at the highest dose. This is called the maintenance phase. You can, however, still lose weight at this point by integrating lifestyle changes like an improved diet and regular exercise.

Why am I not losing weight on Wegovy?

It can take a few weeks to start seeing results on Wegovy, especially on the lower starting doses. Diet, activity levels, sleep, and stress can all affect your progress, too. If you've been on Wegovy for several weeks without any changes, speak to your prescriber, as it might be time to review your dose or approach.

Will I regain weight when I stop taking Wegovy?

Some weight regain is common after stopping Wegovy. This is because the medication works by suppressing appetite and regulating hunger hormones, and these effects wear off once you stop. Adopting healthy diet and exercise habits while on treatment can help minimise weight regain, but if you're concerned, talk to your prescriber about a long-term plan.

Does Wegovy affect the contraceptive pill?

Unlike Mounjaro, Wegovy doesn't directly interfere with how the contraceptive pill works, so you don't need extra protection just because you're taking it. But if you experience vomiting or diarrhoea within a few hours of taking your pill, your body might not absorb it properly. If that happens, use condoms or another backup method for the next 7 days. As Wegovy isn't safe to take during pregnancy, keeping on top of your contraception is important. If you're unsure about anything, speak to your prescriber.

How long does nausea last with Wegovy?

Nausea is most common in the first few weeks of starting Wegovy or after a dose increase. For most people, it settles down within 4 to 8 weeks. Eating smaller, lighter meals and avoiding rich or fatty foods can help manage it in the meantime.

How long does Wegovy stay in your system?

Wegovy has a half-life of around 1 week, which is why it’s taken as a once-weekly injection. It typically takes around 5–7 weeks to clear from your system after your last dose.

    Is Wegovy addictive?

No, Wegovy isn’t addictive. It works by mimicking a natural hormone in the body and doesn't affect the brain's reward pathways in the way that addictive substances do.

Can you drink alcohol on Wegovy?

There’s no outright ban on alcohol while taking Wegovy, but it’s worth being mindful. Alcohol is high in calories and can work against your weight loss goals. It may also worsen side effects like nausea, and some people report feeling alcohol more strongly or differently while on Wegovy. If you do drink, it’s best to do so in moderation and see how your body responds.
