Potassium citrate is an oral liquid medicine that helps to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of cystitis and other mild urinary tract infections (UTIs). It helps with:
    • burning, stinging, or irritation when you wee
    • general discomfort caused by cystitis and mild UTIs

    How does potassium citrate work?

When you have cystitis or a UTI, your urine becomes more acidic, which is what causes that familiar burning sensation. Potassium citrate works by making your urine more alkaline (less acidic), which reduces the irritation and makes going to the toilet a lot more comfortable. It doesn't kill the bacteria that cause the infection, though, so it's important to keep an eye on how you're feeling. Speak to your GP if you're worried about your infection, your symptoms aren't improving after taking potassium citrate for 2 days, you keep getting infections, or your symptoms are severe. You may need antibiotics to treat the infection.

How long does potassium citrate take to work?

Potassium citrate starts working within 1 to 2 hours of your first dose, so relief can come fairly quickly. Most people find their symptoms feel more manageable by day 2, when the medicine is at its most effective. That said, everyone's different, so it might take a little longer for some people. If your symptoms haven't improved after 48 hours (2 days), you should speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice, as you may need antibiotics to treat the infection.

    How to take potassium citrate

Always shake the bottle before use. Take the mixture by mouth, well diluted with water, 3 times a day after meals.
    • Adults, the elderly, and children over 6: Take 2 x 5ml spoonfuls, well diluted with water, 3 times a day after meals.
    • Children aged 1 to 6: Take 1 x 5ml spoonful, well diluted with water, 3 times a day after meals.
Don't give potassium citrate to children under 1 year old unless your doctor has told you to. If your symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

How long should you take potassium citrate for?

Potassium citrate is intended for short-term use to relieve the symptoms of cystitis or a minor UTI. If your symptoms haven't cleared up after a couple of days, or they keep coming back, it's best to see your doctor. They can check whether you need an antibiotic to clear the infection properly.

    Potassium citrate side effects

Like all medicines, potassium citrate can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Common side effects may include:
    • stomach upsets
    • nausea
    • vomiting
High levels of potassium in the blood may cause:
    • muscle weakness
    • irregular heartbeat
    • paralysis
If you notice any of these or any other side effects, stop taking the medicine and speak to your doctor or pharmacist straight away.

    Who shouldn’t take potassium citrate?

Don't take potassium citrate if you or your child:
    • are allergic to potassium citrate or any of the other listed ingredients
    • have kidney problems
    • have heart problems, including an irregular heartbeat
    • have high levels of potassium in your blood
    • have Addison's disease
    • are under 1 year old
    • are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your GP says it's okay
If you're elderly, you can take potassium citrate but do so with caution, as it can affect older people differently. It's important to note that potassium citrate relieves the symptoms of cystitis but doesn't target the bacteria that cause the infection. If needed, your GP may prescribe an antibiotic to take alongside it.

    Other medicines and potassium citrate

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you or your child are taking any of the following, as they may interact with potassium citrate:

Frequently asked questions about potassium citrate

Is potassium citrate good for cystitis?

Yes, potassium citrate is a well-known remedy for easing the symptoms of cystitis. It won't cure the infection itself, but it can make a difference to how you feel by reducing that painful burning sensation when you wee.

    Are there potassium citrate tablets?

Potassium citrate is also available in tablet and capsule form. You can find it as an over-the-counter dietary supplement. However, it’s important to note this is a dietary supplement and is not suitable for relief of cystitis or UTI symptoms. For relieving cystitis symptoms, the liquid mixture like this one is the standard choice in the UK. If you're not sure which form is right for you, your pharmacist can help.

Does potassium citrate debloat your face?

Potassium citrate mixture is specifically designed to treat cystitis and UTI symptoms, not facial puffiness or water retention. While potassium as a mineral can play a role in fluid balance in the body, this product isn't intended or licensed for that purpose.

Can I take potassium citrate with antibiotics?

In many cases, yes. In fact, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic alongside potassium citrate, since the mixture relieves symptoms but doesn't kill the bacteria causing the infection. However, tetracycline antibiotics are one exception as they can interact with potassium citrate, so always let your GP or pharmacist know everything you're taking before starting.

Can you buy potassium citrate over-the-counter?

Can you buy potassium citrate over-the-counter?

You can buy potassium citrate mixture over-the-counter at pharmacies, like us, without a prescription. However, you'll still need to answer some questions before you're able to buy it to ensure it's safe and suitable for you or your child.
