    Skinoren Cream is a prescription acne treatment for the face, chest, or back. It works by targeting the bacteria responsible for inflammation and spots, helping to reduce breakouts and prevent new ones from forming. If over-the-counter acne products haven’t cleared your skin, Skinoren could be the next step recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

    How Skinoren 20% treats acne

    The active ingredient in Skinoren Cream is azelaic acid, which tackles acne in two key ways. First, it kills Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) - the bacteria that cause spots, inflammation, and pus. By eliminating this bacteria, azelaic acid helps to calm redness and clear existing breakouts. Second, it helps prevent dead skin cells from building up and blocking your pores. This stops blackheads and whiteheads from forming, giving you a comprehensive approach to clearer skin.

    Directions

    1. Before applying Skinoren, wash the area you plan to treat with clean water. If your skin feels oily, you can use a mild cleanser first. Pat dry thoroughly.
    2. The amount of cream you need depends on the area you’re treating. For example, a 2.5 cm strip of cream is usually enough for the entire face. If you’re treating larger areas such as the back or chest, you’ll need a little more. If you’re unsure how much to use, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    3. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and gently rub it in.
    4. Wash your hands after each use.
    For most people, Skinoren is applied twice daily (morning and evening). If your skin is sensitive, start by using it once a day in the evening for the first week, then increase to twice daily.

    Side effects

    Like all medicines, Skinoren Cream can cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Seek emergency medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as:
    • difficulty breathing or swallowing
    • swelling of the face, lips, or throat
    • severe rash
    • Mild skin irritation is common at the start of treatment and often settles as your skin adjusts. If it persists, use less cream or reduce application to once daily. Speak to your doctor if this doesn’t help.
    • Other possible side effects include:
    • burning, itching, or redness at the application site
    • dryness, flaking, or irritation
    • skin discolouration or loss of pigment
    • greasy skin or worsening acne
    • tingling, soreness, or mild swelling
    • cracked lips or small blisters
    • dermatitis, eczema, or ulcers
    • rash, hives, or allergic skin reactions
    • warmth or discomfort in the treated area
    • worsening of asthma symptoms

    Warnings

    Skinoren Cream is for external use only and not suitable for children under 12 years old. Avoid getting it in your eyes, mouth, or other sensitive areas. Do not use Skinoren if you are allergic to azelaic acid or any other ingredients listed in the leaflet. Let your doctor know if you have asthma, as treatment has occasionally been linked to a worsening of symptoms.

    Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Skinoren may not always be the preferred treatment during these times, and your doctor will assess whether the benefits outweigh the risks. If you’re breastfeeding and your doctor advises that Skinoren is safe to use, do not apply it to your breasts before feeding, and make sure your baby does not come into contact with treated skin.
