Midrid capsules give fast acting relief from migraine and throbbing headaches

  • Dual action

Midrid belongs to a group of medicines called analgesics which are used for the relief of pain.

What is Midrid for?
Midrid is a treatment for migraine and throbbing headaches. The active ingredients in Midrid each work in a different way to stop the pain. The throbbing pain sometimes felt during a migraine is linked to swollen blood vessels (vasodilation) in the head. Paracetamol works directly on the pain, whereas isometheptene returns the blood vessels to normal and as a result helps to take away the pain.

Directions

How should I take Midrid?

Midrid capsules should only be taken by adults
Swallow two capsules of Midrid with a drink of water as soon as you know you are getting a migraine. If you still have your migraine an hour later, take one capsule. Continue taking a capsule every hour until your migraine has gone, up to a maximum of five capsules in 12 hours.

Initial dose

  • 2 capsules at once

Repeat dose (if necessary)

  • After 1 hour 1 capsule
  • 2 hours 1 capsule
  • 3 hours 1 capsule

Do not take more than five capsules in 12 hours

If you have any aura or other signs that you are going to get a migraine, take the initial dose of Midrid as soon as you get these warning signs. You may be able to prevent it getting to the headache stage.

If you still have a migraine 12 hours after you started taking Midrid, you can take one more course of treatment. That is, two capsules to start with followed by one capsule every hour, if needed, up to a maximum of five capsules. After this, you should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

If you miss a dose
If you still have a migraine and you forget to take a capsule at the correct time (i.e. later than one hour after the previous dose), take it as soon as you remember. You must then wait another hour before taking a further dose, if your migraine has not gone.

Remember, you must not take more than five capsules in 12 hours

If anyone takes an overdose of this medicine
Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of an overdose, even if you feel well, because of the risk of delayed serious liver damage. If anyone takes more than the correct number of capsules (an overdose) it is very important to take the person to your local Hospital Accident and Emergency Department immediately. Take the carton of Midrid with you even if it is empty.

Contents

Each scarlet coloured capsule contains 325mg paracetamol and 65mg isometheptene mucate.

Further information

What is migraine?
A migraine is only one of many different types of headaches. Migraine attacks affect people in different ways. Some people may suffer from migraines more often than others. The length of time that a migraine lasts may also vary from person to person. Women are more likely to suffer from migraine attacks than men.

With a normal headache the pain is often mild and your usual painkillers will help to relieve the pain. You are then able to go to work or meet friends as usual. However, a migraine attack is quite different and is often linked with a number of other symptoms.

The most common of these are feeling and/or being sick, photophobia (dislike of bright lights), dizziness and blurring of vision. Some people experience an aura which usually occurs before the headache begins. It can be useful as a warning that a migraine attack is likely (see the section ‘How should I take Midrid’). This aura differs from person to person but usually affects the eyes or causes numbness and tingling. The eye effects can be in the form of flashing lights, blind spots or similar problems. Migraine with an aura is known as classic migraine, without an aura it is known as common migraine.

How can you treat migraine?
There are a number of possible causes of migraine.

  • physical or emotional stress.
  • low blood sugar levels
  • certain foods like chocolate, cheese and alcohol
  • tiredness and/or lack of sleep
  • hormonal changes, especially just before a period

These can differ from person to person. If you can work out what causes your migraine attacks, you may be able to reduce their frequency, or even prevent yourself getting one, by avoiding the cause.
