Problem Solving
Problem solving is an important success skill which can be applied to any area of life that you want to succeed in. Problems are a fact of life. They happen to all of us every day and we all cope with them in our own way. The way we think about problems and our problem solving skills have been learned throughout our lives. However, we can all become better at this important skill by trying new ideas and learning from others. Emotions and egos can sometimes become wrapped up in problems, which can make finding solutions much harder. Discussing problems with a friend, mentor or coach can often reveal simple solutions you had overlooked.

Solving Problems
A problem is something you have to think about, and if you want, you can leave it there. You can just ignore it.
Recognising a problem is the first important stage of dealing with it. This is the stage where you start to think about it, and see if you have the answer to solving it. Sometimes it takes a while to recognise a problem and decide what the actual problem is, and once you have done this the problem becomes easier to solve.
Keeping problems in perspective is important, because some problems can become wrapped in emotions, and egos can be threatened. Such problems are harder to solve when a solution has emotional consequences, and may need to be taken slowly, with a lot of thinking things through.
Solving the problem is great if you have the answer, and if that answer actually solves the problem. This is great for easy problems, and we solve a lot of these every day without thinking. Understanding a the real problem is the key to finding the real solution. It is easy to make quick decisions which don't address the actual problem, and such solutions often don't work.
Problems that keep cropping up time and again in the same way, or a similar way, need looking at more closely to see if they are really being solved, or if something fundamental is being missed.
It is easy to fall into the trap of missing the obvious solutions, and getting someone else's ideas and opinions can often provide a simple answer that you had overlooked. It is at times like this that having a mentor or coach can provide breakthroughs that your could have easily missed on your own.
Harder and bigger problems take a bit more effort. There may be a number of different ways of approaching the problem, and a number of different solutions. You may need more information before you can make a decision, and you may need to seek advice from other people.
Solving harder problems is the testing ground of success, and this skill is rewarded and recognised in most jobs with higher pay and promotion. The bigger the problems you can solve the more that you can achieve.
Solving problems that nobody else could solve, or tackling problems in a new way can be the ultimate creative exercise, and can bring personal and world benefits.
