The Importance of Probiotics For Baby & Child Health

During birth, infancy and childhood the types of friendly bacteria that naturally live in the bowels are different to those found in adults, and contain more of the Bifidobacterium infantis and Bifidobacterium bifidum strains. These strains are present to a greater extent in breast fed babies than in formula fed babies, as breastfeeding helps the ingestion of these friendly bacteria.

The first bacteria that a baby will swallow is from the mother's birth canal during birth, and these are the first bacteria to colonise the baby's bowels. This does not happen in Cesarean birth or in premature babies. It is therefore that the mother is in good health and has a good balance of friendly bacteria in her body.

DTECTA ProbioStart is formulated as a daily probiotic supplement to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding to boost a mother's levels of bacteria that are particularly good for babies. It can also be taken directly for babies from 6 months old and children to boost their good bacteria during times of bowel upsets and when taking antibiotics which can kill the good bacteria in the bowels.

A large part of our immune defence system is  produced by the good bacteria in the bowel, and some immune system problems such as allergies and eczema can be helped by improving the levels of good bacteria in the bowel using probiotics.

Childhood Winter Infections Reduced by 25%

ProbioStart Probiotics have been shown to decrease the risk of common childhood infections by about 25%. in a study done in the winter of 2006-7. In this study children were chosen who had suffered at least three bouts of illness the previous winter. A three months course of  ProbioStart Probiotics over the winter period was found to reduce the bouts of illness by 25%, and the number of days off school by 40%. No problems with side effects were noticed in this study.

[The study was designed by taking 135 healthy school-age children who had suffered at least three bouts of  ear-nose-throat, chest or stomach disorder in the previous winter. This would include such problems as colds, sore throats, glue ear, coughs, sickness, diarrhoea and stomach aches. Half were given a three month course of ProbioStart and the other half were not. The results were compared after the three month period. The study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, but is unpublished.]
