Contents

What is Maximum Strength Aspro Clear?

Each effervescent tablet contains 500mg of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).

The tablets also contain: sodium hydrogen carbonate, mannitol, anhydrous citric acid, sodium carbonate, malic acid, lemon flavouring, sodium saccharin, povidone and dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate.

These inactive ingredients help to dissolve the aspirin in water forming a lemon-tasting solution which is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream.

Aspirin belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

It is used for the treatment of pain and reduction of fever. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Warnings

When should Maximum Strength Aspro Clear not be used?
You should not take Maximum Strength Aspro Clear if you

  • Are sensitive to aspirin or any of the ingredients
  • Have bleeding disorders such as haemophilia
  • Have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer

What precautions should be taken?
Make sure you follow the dosage instructions and do not take more than the stated dose.

If symptoms persist for more than 3 days consult your doctor.

There is a possible association between aspirin and Reye’s Syndrome when given to children. Reye’s Syndrome is a very rare disease which can be fatal. For this reason aspirin must not be given to children under 16 years, unless on the advice of a doctor.

As with all medicines, if you are pregnant or are breast feeding you should consult your doctor before use. Aspirin should not be used within one week of the expected delivery date as it may prolong labour or affect blood clotting in the mother or new born baby.

Consult your doctor before taking this product if you are asthmatic, sensitive to aspirin, suffer from gout or stomach ulcers, if you have liver or kidney trouble, or if you are receiving regular medical treatment.

Aspirin can affect the way in which some prescribed medicines work. These prescribed medicines include warfarin used by people with heart trouble, ace inhibitors such as captopril used by people with high blood pressure, antiepileptic drugs such as sodium valproate and phenytoin, medicines used by non insulin dependent diabetics, such as chlorpropamide, medicines for gout and methotrexate.

You should also avoid taking other medicines containing aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as ibuprofen or ketoprofen when taking these tablets.

Maximum Strength Aspro Clear may be harmful to people on a low sodium diet.

What are the undesirable effects of aspirin?
Aspirin may cause mild stomach pain and heartburn, but this can usually be avoided if aspirin is taken with food.

Aspirin can cause stomach bleeding in some people, and cause asthma attacks in some asthmatics. Persons who are sensitive to aspirin may develop skin rashes, wheezing, runny nose or suffer from water retention. If you do experience these symptoms, have unusual stomach pains, or have any other unusual effects stop taking the tablets and go and see your doctor.

If you think you have taken too many tablets you should contact your nearest casualty department or your doctor immediately. Early symptoms of overdose include ringing or buzzing in the ears, hearing loss and/or headache. Signs of overdose in young children include changes in behaviour, severe drowsiness and tiredness, and fast or deep breathing.
