Gary Taubes is an influential science writer who has researched in great depth how the medical establishment came to believe the totally wrong ideas that fats are bad for your heart and make you put on weight, and that you should replace them with carbohydrates. He has published two landmark books explaining this. His first book, 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' (Reprinted as 'The Diet Delusion') explains in scientific terms the science behind these errors, and his second book 'Why We Get Fat' (See our review) contains the same ideas, but written in a way that is less scientific and easier to understand.

In this interview Gary Taubes speaks about how he first became interested in how science could get things so wrong, and then his interest turned to the causes of the obesity epidemic where he found that the ideas that were being promoted just doesn't fit the facts. This culminated in years of work to show that the high intake of carbohydrates is fueling the obesity epidemic, and that fats are good for you (except trans-fats). However, the wrong ideas about carbohydrates and fats is so deeply ingrained into the minds of the medical profession, health organisations, politics, the public, and multi-million pound industries based on these ideas that it will take a long time for the facts to be accepted by everyone.

Gary goes on to talk about the details of the obesity epidemic in some detail which is well worth listening to, but gets a bit scientific at times.
